Translators are required everywhere

Translators are required everywhere. In fact, they are more required than interpreters due to the simple fact that there are a lot of written documents that need urgent translations. Translators are required in national and international agencies. Private agencies also need translators. If you are interested about the qualifications for translators, these tend to vary but we will try to indicate the most common ones:

Expand your knowledge

Now, in order to be a translator, you don't necessarily have to obtain a degree in foreign language. It is common to apply to degrees such as communications or journalism with a minor in a language that you want to become fluent in. You can even expand your knowledge by attending graduate school. Master degrees often have to deal with translation studies. Now, you may have heard that a future translator should study abroad in order to immerse himself/herself in the language.

Search for immersion programs

It is absolutely recommendable. Search for immersion programs that allow you to understand the complexities of learning a new language. Knowledge about several programs such as Excel, Word, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat, are necessary because translators are often handling digital documents. Have good dictionaries in hand; grammatical dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, thesaurus, encyclopedic dictionaries, etc.

Now, you can specialize in a specific type of translation. Yet, we recommend you to become fluent in many of them. There are many types of translations, and each one of them requires a specific language. Administrative translation demands you to translate business/administrative documents. In this case, a good knowledge about administration/management would be ideal. Commercial translation covers all sorts of financial transaction documents as well as reports, correspondence, company accounts, tender documents, etc. A vast vocabulary in finance and commerce would be required.

Computer translation

Computer translation is another type of translation that is required nowadays. You may translate software programs, manuals, help files and other computer-related information. Economic translation may be similar to business translations except that you may have to deal with more economic terms. Texts may be academic. General translation requires you to have a vast experience about diverse topics but you would not need to acquire a more specific or technical language in order to translate a document. It is the most common type of translations.

Legal translations

Legal translations are probably the most complicated because specialized attention is needed. All the translations should be done perfectly in order not to leave room for any misinterpretation. It is ideal to learn about the legal system of both the source language and the target language. Other types of translations are: literary translation (poems, novels, plays), medical translation (manual for medical equipments, medical books, etc) and technical translation (manuals and instructions.)
